ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia vs Sri Lanka: Australia won its first campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 by defeating Sri Lanka by five wickets in the match at Ekana in Lucknow on Monday.
Five-time World Cup champions Australia chased down Sri Lanka’s score of 209 with 14 overs remaining. This is Australia’s first win in the World Cup 2023.
Sri Lanka’s new captain Mendis won the toss and decided to bat first. And Sri Lankan openers Kusal Perera (78) and Pathum Nissanka (61) made 125 runs for the first wicket. As soon as the openers were out, the Sri Lankan team collapsed like a pack of cards. Australia’s bowlers bowled well, with Adam Zampa (4/25), Mitchell Starc (2) and Pat Cummins (2/32) taking wickets. Maxwell took 1 wicket.
Josh Inglis (58) and Mitchell Marsh (52) played half-centuries for Australia. And Marnus Labuschagne scored 40 runs. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, who remained unbeaten, scored 31 and 20 respectively.
Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka took 3 wickets.
