International Olympic Committee (IOC): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics (LA28) proposal to add five additional sports to the 2028 Olympic Games programme. The five sports are:

  • baseball/softball
  • Cricket
  • flag football
  • lacrosse
  • Squash

“The choice of these five new sports is consistent with American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world while also bringing international sports to the United States. These games will make the Olympic Games LA28 unique,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Their joining will allow the Olympic Movement to connect with new athlete and fan communities in the U.S. and globally.”

“I have long believed that we have an incredible opportunity in Los Angeles to create the most compelling game not only for us, but for the world. Our Olympic Games program, as a whole, reflects this belief,” said LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman. “We are excited to launch a game-changing collaboration with the major professional leagues that will unlock huge opportunities to enhance the Olympic and Paralympic story and attract new audiences.”

The inclusion of these five sports will increase the number of sports in the Olympic programme.

  • Both baseball/softball and cricket have been part of the Olympic program in the past.
  • Baseball/softball was played at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, while cricket was played at the Olympic Games in Paris 1900.
  • Lacrosse was played on the St. Louis 1904 and London 1908 schedules.
  • While flag football and squash will make their Olympic debut in LA28.

Modern pentathlon and weightlifting:

The IOC session also endorsed the recommendations made by the IOC EB regarding the status of modern pentathlon and weightlifting, which were not part of the initial sports program of LA28.

The other 28 sports that are part of the LA28 Olympic program were approved by the IOC session in February 2022.
