Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, World Cup 2023: Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets

Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in the 30th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on October 30, 2023.

Sri Lanka batting first. All out for 241 runs in 49.3 overs. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 46 runs. Sadira Samaravikrana and Kusal Mendis also played innings of 36 and 39 runs respectively.

Afghanistan’s bowling attack was led by Fazalhaq Farooqui, who took four wickets for 34 runs. Azmatullah Umarzai and Rashid Khan took one wicket each and Mujeeb ur Rehman also took two wickets.

In reply, Afghanistan achieved the target with 7 wickets in 45.2 overs. Ibrahim Zadran (39) and Rahmat Shah (62) gave Afghanistan a solid start at the top of the order. However, it was Hashmatullah Shahidi (58*) and Azmatullah Umarzai (73*) who put on a match-winning partnership of 112 runs for the fourth wicket.

Shahidi and Umarzai played intelligently and rotated the strike well. They punished loose balls and took the match away from Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan’s win was comprehensive and showed that they are a major force to be reckoned with in this World Cup. They have a balanced team with a good mix of experience and youth.
